Eye catching

Things that catch my eye.

Happy Feet

I don’t know about you, but I think they remind me of M&Ms. Colour perks me up, colormekatie style.

Drink up

At Max Brenner’s. My love for their quirky cups doesn’t extend to their drinks.

Wired.

An art exhibition we stumbled across. It was framed and all set up, all I did was shoot. Gotta love the effects.

Blue

M brought us here for the photo-ready shot. It makes me feel like this leads to somewhere promising, except it doesn’t.

For the birds

I love this shot. Silhouette of birds on wires. My envy has drawn it before too. I almost missed this, until my colleague pointed through the moon roof of our cabin. I’m glad she did.

pretty #1

Lovely product from M&S. Everytime I see such stuff, it inspires me to draw.

pretty #2

M&S again, I super love the illustrations on M&S packagings.

Stitched!

Love this.

christmas is coming!

My current read and its cover,

in answer to everyone’s reaction to my all-white paper cover book.

Love the feel of a good book on my hand.

Haven’t been drawing in awhile.

Random doodle I was showing to a colleague,

on a random day with a random splitting headache.

Up, Part II

So I was enthusiastically adding clay and not realising that Russell was getting too fat.

I did think that something didn’t look quite right (again),

but I thought anything could be rectified

so I went ahead with his badges, buttons and his scarf.

It was until I was done with all these details that it suddenly dawned on me that Russell was too wide.

You know how when you lose quite a lot of weight, you can’t alter your clothes, but instead need a new set?

That was kind of how it was.

I had to strip the details off so that I could scrape at his body and neck (or the lack of one).

Finally, behold, Russell v4.0, my current version:

While working on Russell 4.0, I tried the top-down approach: first his uniform, and then the shoes,

but then I realised that i kept smudging his uniform while adjusting his legs.

That’s why this time, if you noticed, (as compared to attempt #3) he’s got his socks and shoes first before the badges and backpack.

This is the side view of attempt 4.

You can see my reference picture in the background,

which I used to gauge and compare his side profile against.

To be continued…(:

Up, Part I

as usual, this is backdated.

A few months back, Jerry*(*not real name) had a voluntarily friendship offer – to teach us how to sculpt.

Panda and I accepted it.

There were months when we spent almost every Saturday at Jerry’s home.

Armed with metal tools like those on the left,

metal that stank when mixed (I forgot the name),

and loads of Sculpey Clay (see right),

we set out to create out very own masterpieces along with NFB.

We were suppsed to pick our own characters.

Guess what Pig chose?  Naturally, coming from the pixar fan, *drumroll*:

Why I picked Russell: I couldn’t find a Russell toy/model online that looked realistic enough by my stringent standards. So I decided, I shall make my own! (I’m starting to eat my own thoughts.)

Anyway, it was really an eye opener to learn how to do everything from scratch.

If there’s one most important thing I learnt from this experience,

it’s that these clay models are much harder to make than they seem as the final product sitting in those collector’s toy shops.

Waayyyy harder.

And because models are 3d and every angle of the model is exposed, attention to detail must be paid for Every Single Part.

In these sessions, we covered how to make fingers and eyeballs.

I’ve got a new found respect for all the clay sculptors of all those anime and manga sculptures.

(It doesn’t make me part with the money for such expensive sculptures better, but I do feel their effort much more now).

We started with wires for the foundation, and I got a new found respect for Jerry too.

Because I couldn’t picture what it should look like at the core with just wires only.

And behold:

Ok, it was pretty bad.

When you work on a sculpture, it’s kind of easy to get lost in the small details and lose sight of the big picture.

I got too carried away in the eyes and uniform and forgot to check the overall look of Russell.

The boy looks like a Russell with grossly exaggerated cheekbones.

And so operation-slim-his-cheekbones took place and i striped off all other accessories to redo again.

This was attempt 2.

I would, later, get lost again later and keep piling on clay without realising it till it was too late. :x

Will update about my progress again.

Sidenote: He looks like he has got scrawny chicken legs, doesn’t he?

[Alice] went on. “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.

“I don’t much care where –” said Alice.

“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.

“– so long as I get somewhere,” Alice added as an explanation.

“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.”
